The best Pilates outfit is simple. Fitted, breathable activewear and a pair of grip socks will carry you through almost any class. A few small choices make your first session more comfortable and help your instructor guide you well, so here is the full rundown.
The best clothing for Pilates
Choose form fitting, stretchy pieces such as leggings or bike shorts with a supportive top. Fitted beats baggy for two reasons. Your instructor needs to see your alignment to cue you safely, and loose fabric tends to get in the way, especially on the reformer where it can catch or ride up. Pick fabrics that breathe and move with you.
Why grip socks matter
Grip socks have rubber traction on the sole. They keep your feet secure on the reformer carriage and the mat, improve your connection to the equipment, and keep things hygienic. Most boutique studios strongly recommend or require them, and if you do not own a pair yet we have them at the studio.
Do you wear shoes in Pilates?
No. Pilates is practised barefoot or in grip socks, never in trainers. Going shoeless helps you engage the small stabilising muscles of your feet, which improves balance and body awareness. This is standard practice in Pilates and low impact movement generally (NHS guide to Pilates).
What to avoid
- Baggy or oversized clothing that hides your alignment
- Zips, buttons, or hardware that dig in when you lie on the reformer or mat
- Heavy jewellery and dangling accessories
- Strong perfume, since small studios are shared, calm spaces
- Regular loose socks, which slip and are unsafe
What to bring
Bring water, a hair tie if you have longer hair, and a small towel, which is a must for Hot Pilates. New to all of this? Our guide on Pilates for beginners covers everything else, then come as you are and book your first class.
